It is quite commom to have advanced students stating that learning idioms and slangs won´t do any good for their knowledge. Only years and years living in the country, living the language day and night, watching all the TV programmes, speaking to all kinds of people can help getting to a turnpoint, they argue.
On the other hand, we will always have these topics as requirements of all international exams which put them under certain pattern to follow.
Teachers continue teaching idioms and slangs, books are full of them, films, foruns on internet, and so on.
